Two sisters from different parts of the world reunite on a trip to the South of France and revel in the aesthetic pleasures of its countryside….My week on the Cote D’Azur in the autumn of 2019 was my last holiday before the pandemic. The world at the time was innocent to the blow it was about to be dealt in the form of the COVID-19 virus merely two months later. I wrote this piece soon after my return from France. I was on a high, the smell of lavender still lingered in the clothes that had just been pulled out of my suitcase. Little did I realise that it would be a long time before my story would appear and that when it did, it would end up reading like a fable from a long, long time ago. So here it is, a memory made even more precious because I have not seen my sister now in over a year. While most of the restaurants and vineyards mentioned in this piece are open, some of the places mentioned here are temporarily closed until the next season.

There’s nothing like the iPhone to remind you th There’s nothing like the iPhone to remind you that you’re ageing by callously throwing up old photos. This was five years ago.
I’ve been reading Paul Theroux’s The Great Rai I’ve been reading Paul Theroux’s The Great Railway bazaar recently and I must confess I’m filled with loathing for the man.
Theroux tries to experience india from the confines of a train compartment and with the added filter of his crude racism he makes at a horrifyingly distasteful commentary on India (and It’s surprising that a man of his erudition should have been so myopic and lazy in his understanding of a country as complex as ours.
Throughout the book he refers to Indians as black, very black, shiny black with thick lips, poor, hungry, spitting, pissing…piled up on footpaths like dead bodies. He doesn’t for once bring up the fact that colonialism might have something to do with the vast destitution of the country. The educated, polite and helpful Indians he meets on the various trains of India too aren’t spared his mockery and contempt.
Compare that with AA Gill’s description and understanding of India in the passages I’ve posted and you’ll understand what it means to travel without preconceived notions and an open mind.
