Articles by me / Published Articles / Travel In London, an Immersion into Japan’s Kimono Culture (Condé Nast Traveller) October 28, 2020 0 Kimono to Catwalk at the V&A was Europe’s first major exhibition on the iconic Japanese drape I wasn’t expecting to be enthralled by an exhibition inside a museum in the middle of a pandemic when even meeting a friend at a café seems like wishful thinking. And yet, that’s exactly how I felt as I walked through the galleries of Kimono – Kyoto to Catwalk at the V&A Museum in London last week. Kimono, a word which translates in English as ‘the thing to wear’, is so much more than what it literally means. An iconic costume from an exotic culture, an ensemble that hides within its folds many intriguing tales, a piece of artistry, a declaration of class and status… this exhibition adequately revealed that a kimono is all that and more.
